2048 overview

2048 is a 4 × 4 number puzzle where every move slides the full board. Equal tiles that meet combine into their sum, and a new 2 or 4 appears after each valid move.

Controls and modes

Slide with Arrow keys or WASD, swipe on touchscreens, or use the four direction buttons. Reach 2048 to win, then choose Keep Playing to continue building the score.

Strategy tips

• Keep your largest tile anchored in one corner and build nearby tiles toward it.
• Arrange large values in a descending row or column to make future merges easier.
• Avoid filling all four rows with scattered values; empty cells provide room to reorganise.
• A move that changes nothing adds no tile, so use that fact to check the board safely.

Worked example: Two pairs merge separately in one move

Imagine one row contains 2, 2, 2, 2 and you move left. Ignore the new random tile until after you have worked out the merges.

1. The left pair combines into 4 and the right pair combines into another 4. The row becomes 4, 4, empty, empty before a new tile appears.
2. The score gain is 8: each newly made 4 contributes four points. Those two new 4s do not immediately combine into 8 during the same move.
3. Likewise, 2, 2, 4, empty becomes 4, 4, empty, empty with a gain of 4. On a later left move the two 4s can combine, provided the intervening random spawn has not changed the arrangement.

Calculate the slide and merges first, then consider the random spawn anywhere in an empty board cell. A move that changes no tile position or value creates no new tile.

2048 questions

Does the game stop at 2048?

No. Reaching 2048 opens a result prompt, but you may continue toward larger tiles.

When is the game over?

It ends when the board is full and no horizontal or vertical merge remains.
