Play free streamlined chess against a computer, a local friend, or an online opponent. No castling or en passant; pawns promote automatically to queens.

Chess overview

This streamlined browser chess game supports standard piece movement, check, checkmate, stalemate, captured-piece displays, and automatic queen promotion. It offers computer, same-device, and online-room matches.

Controls and modes

Click a piece, then click one of its highlighted legal destinations. Choose Vs Computer, 1v1 Local, or Online Room; the bot plays Black and White always moves first.

Strategy tips

  • Develop knights and bishops early so more pieces can influence the centre.
  • Check every highlighted destination for the opponent’s strongest reply before committing.
  • Avoid trading a high-value queen or rook for a lightly defended pawn or minor piece.
  • Advance a passed pawn carefully; reaching the final rank automatically promotes it to a queen.

Worked example: Legal destinations are not promises of a safe move

After selecting a piece, GamingLand highlights legal destinations. A highlighted square can still be attacked by an opponent's piece.

  1. Before moving, look at the opponent's pawns, knights, and sliding pieces that can reach the destination. Legal means the move is permitted; it does not mean the piece cannot be captured next turn.
  2. When your king is in check, look for a legal king move, a capture of the checking piece, or a block of a sliding attack. A knight's check cannot be blocked by placing a piece between it and the king.
  3. Checkmate means the king is in check and there is no legal escape. Stalemate means there is no legal move but the king is not in check; that is a draw.

Do not plan around castling or en passant in this version. A pawn reaching the final rank becomes a queen automatically, so underpromotion tactics do not apply. Win by checkmate; you do not need to capture the king.

Chess questions

Are castling and en passant available?

No. This streamlined version does not implement those two special moves; promotion always produces a queen.

How does a game end?

Checkmate awards the win. Having no legal move while not in check produces a stalemate draw.
