Typing Test overview

Typing Test measures speed and accuracy against generated strings of words, numbers, and symbols. Only correctly entered characters contribute to WPM, so controlled typing can outperform fast but error-heavy input.

Controls and modes

Select 15, 30, or 60 seconds and choose Words + Mix, Numbers, or Symbols. Click the text area and begin typing; the timer starts with the first entered character.

Strategy tips

  • Prioritise accuracy first because incorrect characters do not increase the calculated WPM.
  • Keep your eyes near the highlighted current character instead of looking back at completed text.
  • Use the 15-second test for warm-ups and longer tests for a steadier speed measurement.
  • Practise Numbers or Symbols mode when those characters slow you down more than ordinary words.

Worked example: Compare speed using correct characters

At the end of a 30-second test, suppose you entered 100 characters and 90 matched their corresponding positions in the prompt.

  1. The correct count is 90, including any correctly typed spaces, numbers, and symbols. The remaining 10 characters do not contribute to WPM.
  2. Divide 90 by five to get 18 standardized words. Divide that by half a minute to get 36 WPM.
  3. Accuracy is 90 ÷ 100 × 100 = 90%. If you skip a space, later letters may sit at the wrong positions, so correcting that early mistake can restore several matches.

Compare attempts with the same duration and mode. Numbers and Symbols modes still contain words, with a digit or symbol added to each word. The saved best is one shared WPM record across modes and durations, not a separate ranking for each.

Typing Test questions
